Maya Angelou
Author and yoga teacher Lisa Maria is passionate about the power of yoga to awaken and reveal the vibrant life force that lives within us all. She jumped at the opportunity to align with YogaWorks to spread yoga to as many people as possible. As YW’s workshop director, Lisa creates events for people of all backgrounds to explore the many flavors of yoga. Her on-camera media experience includes modeling for Getty Images, City Lights Clothing, Lululemon Athletica and the cover of Tataasthu magazine, plus multiple appearances on ABC’s View from the Bay. Off camera, Lisa’s articles have been published in Yoga Journal, Fit Yoga, Yoga Magazine UK and Yogi Times, and in her former column in Common Ground. Her biography of Oprah Winfrey for children will be published in January 2010.
Lisa adjusts her teaching to the needs of each student, offering multiple pose variations within fluid sequences. Challenging and relaxing, playful and meditative, her classes maintain a focus on physical alignment, conscious breath and mindful awareness. Her primary teacher is her 13-year-old daughter, Scirocco. Lisa’s other teachers include Janice Gates, Philip Moffet, Nischala Joy Devi, and life.
For twenty years, Lisa has been engaged in holistic wellness in many capacities. Her work experience includes sales, management, outreach and education for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, Fresh Fields, Wild Oats, New Chapter Supplements and Kent Homeopathic Associates. Her journalism background includes co-founding, co-producing and co-hosting 21st Century Radio and Earth Network Live!, two weekly talk radio programs which featured numerous cultural visionaries, including Deepak Chopra, Larry Dossey, Wayne Dyer, Stanislav Grof, Jean Houston, Gerald Jampolsky, John Robbins, Andrew Weil, Bob Weir and Marianne Williamson.
In 1987, Lisa received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature with an emphasis in Women's Studies and Communications, from Goucher College in Towson, Maryland. Other areas of focus include the NIA Technique (as student and teacher), Khatak (performing this classical Indian dance form with Gypsy Moon Theatre), Herbalism, Homeopathy, Diet and Nutrition, Pregnancy and Labor Support, Childbirth Education, and Life.
